Home Amp/Preamp Asylum

Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here.

But, it appears you're using preamp tubes 4-5 X faster than I !

Allen Wright,

You mention having 4 years use from preamp tubes- a number I would find unacceptable. As hard as the Audio Research SP10 pushes tubes, three months ago I changed tubes that that were in that preamp since 1991. I checked a few of the 6- 19 year old Sovteks changed out and they were actually fine- 85-90% of new. I changed these so as to replace the two line stage gain Sovteks 6922's for Amperex 7308's and the other four were changed to Tungsram E88CC. I consider having 4 or 5 times the tube life significant. Perhaps your preamp uses inexpensive tubes but replacements for the 6- SP10 gain tubes are over $100 each these days.

Personally, I would never buy any electrical equipment with a deliberately difficult on-off switch. There is no valid reason for inconvenient controls- it's an insult to the user and something I associate with poor design. I have a cheap copier, scanner, fax machine with no power switch at home and it's so annoying I often consider replacing it so I don't have to plug and unplug for every use.

And, if your preamp requires 24 hours before it's sounds it's optimum I would consider another make! It's impossible to believe that all components would not have reached their operating temperatures long before that time. Even my very cold-blooded Audio Research solid state LS3 and D130 achieve their optimum sound after about 5 hours.

Cheers,

Bambi B
