musicalchap,
I only checked Amazon's price, and see the NAD C352 is about $800. There are no Audio Research amplifiers on me list currently offered on Audiogon, but I see for example a D300 (160W) at $1,150- this was $4,000 new. It seems to me stretching a bit on the budget could provide your friend with 20 years of a very high standard sound. As I mentioned, the other ARC amplifiers on my list should be closer to the NAD price- the last D130 I saw was, I think, about $750.
If your friend is replacing a receiver, is he looking for a preamplifier as well? Personally, I would start with the preamp as it sort of sets the general personality of the system.
Cheers,
Bambi B
