RE: NAD C315BEE and Vandersteen 2C Signature II

musicalchap,

A friend recently bought a pair of Vandersteen 2CE Signature II's and an Audio Research VS55 amplifier.

The Vandersteens need a lot of burning in- 400 hours, and not wanting to waste the VS55 tubes- nor those of an Audio Research SP10 preamp, he decided to buy an amplifier for the burning in process that he also use in his office system later. This new amplifier was to replace an Adcom 235 (60W) that was his utility amp previously.

The amplifier was the C315BEE 40W integrated and surprise, after the C315 was itself warmed-up, he thought it quite good- in fact very good for the price in fact. He did not intend to listen critically, but still noticed it worked well. The 40W was apparently not a great problem- the room is small, about 12 X 14. This is probably mainly a testament to the Vandersteens' qualities, but this fellow is extremely critical.

This is not of course, the combination on which you seek comment, but I found my friend's comments to be encouraging that there are good results to be had from relatively inexpensive amplification.

You don't mention if you have already purchased the 2CE's or the NAD, but if you're a bit adventurous and have a budget for the amplifier of say $700-1100, I can recommend a good used Audio Research solid state amplifier like the D240 (120W), D130 (130W), D200 (110w), and D300 (160W), all of which I can almost guarantee will give excellent results- and are beautifully made. Vandersteen uses Audio Research to voice their speakers. And, ARC stuff is so beautifully built, I have no qualms in buying ARC gear that is 10-15 years old. My 1985 SP8 preamp has all it's original tubes and has ever needed a repair. I use a 1996 LS3 line stage and D130 (ss.130W) in my office system- which is an amazingly neutral and dynamic combination. I was very lucky with these two as the LS3 and D130 cost only $500 each. I mention this as the Vandersteens have such great potential if the amplification is at a similar standard. Good cables are a big help too- I recently changed to Audioquest Rocket 88's and this was one of the best upgrades I've made in a long while.

Cheers,

Bambi B
