rblnr,

Yes, of course I haven't heard the RM40's, but all the reviews and your comments seem to be positive and everyone mentions they're very good value.

And, it's a pity as the Audio Research 210's are really excellent amplifiers, one of the few that I would prefer over the M100 monoblocks or D250 Servo of the late 80's. The 210's really rise out of the field all the V's, VT's, VTM's, and VS's - which all work just fine, but don't have that impressively memorable quality of the 210's. The 610's are very nice as well.

Speakers suggestion: If you are considering replacing the RM40's I heard wonderful results with the 210's with the Vandersteen Quatros and 5A's, though should mention that these are also the only speakers I've heard with the 210's. Still, I can enthusiastically suggest you consider them in your auditioning of RM40 replacements. There is a well-known synergy between ARC amplification and Vandersteen speakers, certainly because ARC uses them extensively in their listening room for voicing refinement.

And, of the two, the Quatro would be my choice- they do everything well: the soundstage, imaging, dynamics, discretion between sounds, natural timbre, transparency, and overall refinement is just amazing. Besides imaging- which these two do as well as anything I've heard, an important criteria for speakers for me is an effortlessly detailed and transparent bass and for me the Quatros actually exceed the 5A's in that respect- the subwoofer integration to me strikes a better balance. -It's pleasant too to like the model that costs $7,000 less! One important feature of the Quatros and the 5A's is the way in which they are so tunable to the room- they employ something like 11 controls, so with a careful setup and refinement of the settings they are amazingly good.

I spoke to Richard Vandersteen a couple of months ago, and he was of course very excited about the new 7's. If you audition Vandersteens, perhaps you could listen to the 7's and let us know what you think! I'm, afraid to hear them as they cost as much as a new BMW, and would have to wait until I find used ones that are 12 years old to afford them,..

By the way, what preamp and sources are your using?

Cheers,

Bambi B
