Sadly, the prototype SP-4 was quite stunning.
Because we had to co-opt our listening room to build the Analog Modules, we never got to critically listen to the production models. We didn't actually know what happened to the sound. I remember Wendell and myself taking the very first production SP-4s to HP and JGH (who was still in PA back then).
Motorola told us at the last minute that they couldn't meet the specs we required for the solid state devices. By that time, we were all in and it was too late. Although we were the major player in high-end electronics in the mid '70s, ARC was still a relatively small company.
We just had to hope that the Motorola folks were right and that it wasn't really necessary to meet our admittedly lofty specs.
Although we had no wriggle room by then, it was ultimately a bad decision. Almost fatal.
The good news is that Bill redoubled his efforts in vacuum tubes and transistors from ARC eventually went on the back burner.
Best regards,
Jim Smith
