My vote- McIntosh MC40's

www.records,

I perhaps shouldn't chime in as I don't know the Altec 17 speakers exactly- though I think I have a sense of their general character and I haven't heard any of the 5 alternative listed amplifiers, but in my opinion the McIntosh MC40- and MC30 are two of my favourite vintage McIntosh pieces- both sweet, spatial, defined, and listenable forever.

A friend had a pair of MC40's that for years worked from a Marantz preamp- I can't recall now which one. Later, I used to hear a pair of MC30's every couple of months at a record shop- I've forgotten which McIntosh preamp was used but it was always impressive and memorable sound. A coupe of years after that shop closed, a lot of my enthusiasm to purchase a McIntosh MX110 and MC240 combination came from hearing the monoblock 40's my friend had and the 30's in that shop.

In my view, the other amplifiers mentioned would have to be among the very best vintage gear to best the MC40's.

I see in your profile you use a C-J PV10 and that happens to be about my favourite C-J preamplifier- good sounding, excellent value for money- and I would think might work very well with the old McIntosh stuff.

You might try searches on Vintage and Tubes and possibly post to or write Jim McShane about the Citation V- he's bound to know just what to do with that one.

Cheers,

Bambi B
