Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here.

Can you explain a bit more on the subject of tubes in power supplies?

unclestu52,

This is interesting as I've been using pre- and power amplifiers with tubes in the power supplies a long time- Audio research is fond of them: SP8 1985 (12BH7 and 12AT7?), SP10 1987 (2-5881's and 12AT7) and D115 1985(6550 and 12AT7?) all use tubes in the power supplies. I understand the Dynaco ST70 power supply tube- GZ34, and the EICO HF-12- EZ81, are rectifiers.

My thought had been that this tube as "regulator"- the term ARC always uses in their description of these tubes- is doing switching of currents from the the transformer and is not in the signal path, but I could see how it might need to be dynamically responsive to a complex waveform.

Obviously, I don't understand the job the regulator tube does. After reading your reply to WernerLen, I tried reading a bit on this subject, but the articles I saw required a detailed knowledge of power supply design.

Could you explain a bit about the regulator tube or "series pass device for a regulator stage" and why the sonic characteristics are so noticeable? Can you comment also on the demands of tubes in this use that would affect the life? I am planning to replace the 1987 Sylvanias 5881's and the PS 12AT7 in the SP10 in the near future when I change the gain pot and the line stage gain tubes.

As usual, very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Bambi B
