Switching on and off sequences- Noisiest ON first and OFF last

cktc,

I use an Audio Research D115 all-tube amplifier that makes a substantial kind of double pop with the second pop louder when switching off. I was told years ago that this pop represents "DC offset" -and whatever that means, it's normal for that design.

My approach to the sequence of turning things on and off is to turn on the item with the biggest power supply or with the noisiest switching noise first- and wait 30 seconds before turning on the other components. This means that if the component is making any spikes in the lines, the other gear is not on to receive and possibly amplify it. Besides the D115, I do this with my recording Yamaha S90 synthesizer too. If I have the recording computer on and the software running, turning on the S90 will make quite a large amplitude spike in the waveform- visible evidence of this process.

In turning off, I leave the noise-maker to last- again for the same reason of not having other equipment on line to receive any harsh signals.

How do you like the D300? I was thinking of a D400 for my main system as I am planning new power hungry speakers- plus the cost of maintenance on the D115 is- noticeable. Retubing and new electrolytic caps will be over $1,000.

In preparation for possible solid state in the main system, after over 20 years with all tube Audio Research, I bought a D130 and LS3 for the office and these have proved neutral and practical. The D130 does run very cool and I believe it takes almost 5 hours to fully warm up- I left it running all the time.

If your D300 didn't arrive with a manual, I'd recommend getting one from Audio Research. Although I think there was never a D300 MKII, send ARC the serial number anyway to ensure the correct version- and they can tell you exactly when it was made as well. I think these manuals are still about $10. My guess is that the manual will have recommendations for the switching on and off sequences.

Cheers,

Bambi B
