When you put the pre-amp in stand-by mode you are essentially turning the interconnect feeding the Quads into an antenna. I suggest you simply leave the pre-amp on all the time
with the volume turned all the way down.
Most damage to solid-state gear occurs on start-up and it's only 20 watts or so. Warm transistors sound better anyway.
