I too have been experimenting with a variety of pre-amps. My conclusion is that they all impart their own distinct 'sonic signature' which is by definition, distortion as are tone controls of any kind.
My solution is a totally passive selector box for my line-level inputs. Since I have an excellent phono-stage I have no need for further amplification before the signal enters my mono-blocks. As for volume controls; they are conveniently on the front panel of my power amps.
A little awkward perhaps but my sound is beyond reproach IMO. Maybe $20,000.00 pre-amps
don't impart their own sound but it's all academic for me unless I win the lottery.
