How I'd characterize the RCA tube (especially the 12AX7) is that it has the refinement of a Tele or a Mullard, but with "muscle"! And that's why it seems to work best (IMO) in my amp's first stage.On the other hand, I found that also putting RCA's in later stages (12AT7, 12AU7, etc.) produces a sonic presentation that borders on the 'hyper-real' -- sort of like an electostat that hasn't broken in yet? So following the RCA's with Tele/Mullard/Amperex seems to result in an almost perfect sonic balance -- at least in my MC275.
