A year ago I had never heard of Van Alstine. I needed a short term inexpensive replacement for a pair of Wolcott's that I had to sell.
A friend recommended the 550, I saw some very enthusiastic comments here and bought a used one that was like 8 years old. I was very pleasantly surprised. Only payed like $1200, put in some Telefunken,s and was treated to a wonderfully natural and powerful sound. I'm still enjoying it and consider it one of my best audio bargains. It's real strength is that it does not have any weaknesses. Good to very good in every listening parameter, just an outstanding performer at this price. I've got it mated with some pretty nice gear (Placette, Naim, Von Schweikert) and it is very much at home. When finances allow I'm sure I'll reach out for something else but I'll be hard pressed to sell the 550. Definately worth an audition if your in the under $3500 price range and you need some clean power.
