I've recently built a DIY JLH69 amp, which is a classic John Linsey Hood Class A design from 1969. It has only 10w/ch, but can drive my 90db speakers fairly well. Class A sound in my experience has a very nice "lit from within" quality. Meaning the soundstage can seem beautifully fleshed out compared to AB designs. There can be a purity of tone that is addictive. But like other posters have said, not all Class A amps are created equal. As for, heat, that is a critical consideration in a design. If sufficient steps aren't taken to choose appropriate heatsinking, ventilation, quality parts, etc. I can see where problems could develop. But amps from Threshold, Nelson Pass or Accuphase are tyically done "right" and should last years.
You do want to use an amp stand that has sufficient ventilation around it if you do go Class A. Don't subject it to a closed up rack by any means.
