It all comes down to personal preference, and preferences can change. Or sometimes you just want to experience something different. For example, I once owned the EAR 834P tube phono preamp. This is a phono preamp that is known to be very rich, warm, lush, smooth, with a fantastic midrange. I was very impressed. It made some old harsh LPs listenable but after a couple months I couldn't stand it anymore. Too much detail was missing and that overly ripe sound eventually drove me nuts. I sold it.
Was it a bad phono preamp? No. Even though I lean a bit toward wanting a somewhat warm and robust sound, the EAR was over the top too much to handle long term.
On the other hand many so-called "neutral" sounding [is there such a thing] gear strike me as very transparent, thin, cold, analytical, and lean.
So if there is such a thing as "neutral" [and I say there isn't] I would probably be in the camp of enjoying slightly to the right of neutral.
