2nd and 3rd order does mask higher order HD, and not only in the source component but also in associated equipment. Hence the satisfaction a lot of folks find placing a tube preamp ahead of a S/S amp.Agree also that sane levels of 2nd order are not heard as distortion oer se , but, I believe, it does affect the sound's "tone", (I think I heard that word somewhere recently).
