how 'Neutral' is your room and the rest of your system?

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING sounds like the real thing. I've been there almost my entire life. I've played 3 instruments quite proficiently before I worked in a music store and then played many more in my spare time so I knew what clients were talking about. If I didn't know then my teachers did.

You might get shockingly close if you threw enough money at it. How much is that? I would get off my lazy ass and take lessons at my local shop or at least look around. Ask the salesman about the old REAL Ebony wood Selmer clarinets or the Selmer Mark 6 Brass Saxophones. Brush your fingers lightly against the different Zildjian and Sabian cymbals. 2 years ago I went to a 'high end' place to accompany a friend in another state and listened to a 250k system for a while. It was a joke. The salesman didn't know what he was talking about, just a bunch of catch phrases. A system is suppose to relax you, enjoy your time spent, thrill you, escape the world into another, make you want to do it again and again. Maybe even give you a nice illusion with the lights down low.

When are you going to upgrade to the next big distortionless thrill...
