RE: My one McIntosh Experience: Rich warm bloated flabby and veiled

Resale value is affected by the popularity of the specific unit and provided the manufacturer keeps the product in the line-up without a name change AND most importantly that the price of the model continues to rise.

My dealer in Canada sold (6700 I believe) an $8k retail McIntosh amplifier for $2,000. Someone was irritated with me that I said this and phoned the dealer to confirm - yup sold it for $2k. That didn't hold value.

The key though is for the price to rise of the current model. The 275 has been selling for ages off an on and the new list price is fairly high - which aids the resale value of the older units.

This hardly is just the case for McIntosh. My Audio Note OTO has been selling for 20 years and the price has steadily climbed. I bought mine in around 2004ish and I can sell the amplifier now for more than I paid for it. The Same for my Audio Note J/Spe speakers and my Audio Note TT2/arm3/IQ3.

All the models stayed current and the price of silver skyrocketed - the price of the models went up considerably over that time.

I like the idea of owning gear for 6-10 years and only losing inflation. (this doesn't work with the higher end models because rich guys who cans pend $15k on an amp can probably spend the extra $10k to get a new one. So these prices fall.

Brands that change models unfortunately render the prior model worthless.

The Rotel RC 1082 preamp was $1200 new. They replaced the model with a new preamp (EXACTLY THE SAME) except for a cosmetic change and a number change. The $1200 preamp dropped to $500 asking price new in box. Even with a TAS budget preamp of the year in one year the amp's value dropped off the table with my poor meatball. Sucks if you were a Rotel owner - but great for the shrewd used buyer who knows it's the same as the new $1200 model with a different number and casework Cause you get a $1200 preamp for $400!
