Abe,
You are correct regarding the similar sonic foot print of the CA50/VT50/VT100 " they are virtually identical in that regard. So you have a pretty good idea of what a CA50 sounds like. I have found my CA50 to be significantly affected by complex speaker loads. For instance it sounds absolutely lifeless at even reduced volume levels ( in consideration of their low efficiency) with my B&W805's yet very good with a older pair of AR310HO'/ Sequerra HF1 ribbon tweeter combombo , Sequerra Met 7's or Triangle Titus XS's.
The Mac 2275 Is slightly warmer sounding ( and I mean slightly ) depending on the tube complement. As an example I found it too warm with the stock front end tubes and Tungsol 6550's (re-issue) outputs yet just about perfect with Sovetek 12AX7's for phono, Mullard 4024's as drivers and the re-issue Gold Lion KT88's as outputs. It is very powerful for an amp rated at 75 watts per channel and can drive 2 ohm loads with no issues. The phono preamp is very nice and quiet especially with the LPS version of the Sovetek's . I have also used the headphone amp to good effect with Denon, AT, Goldring & Grado headphones. The tone controls switch mostly stay in the defeated position as to my ear it introduces a little veiling. It probably is one of the few amps that would sound very nice with both your Tannoy's and your Thiels. I say this based on having used the Mac both with a Tekton/Fostek single driver system and my B&W's.
Having said all of the above I honestly am not sure which amp I would keep if I could only have one. I love the stark simplicity and purity of sound offered by the CA50 and yet the versatility and power of the 2275 also appeal to me. I guess it comes down to "horses fo course" and a decision I hopefully will not have to make.
