Re: NAD C320BEE or Panasonic SA-XR50?

Go with the NAD C320 BEE ($400 list) over the Panasonic SA-XR50 ($350 list)and to my ears, it is not even that close a call. The NAD is warm and musical sounding and provides a good level of detail with all types of music. The Panasonic is very clean and clear sounding, but not as detailed and somewhat dry. Chamber music sounds fine, but orchestral music can sound a bit cluttered. I reviewed the NAD C320 BEE here about 2 years ago.

With a bit of trial and error, I have found that the NAD really sings when paired the Music Hall MMF CD25 CD player ($540 list). Absolutely magical together and not that fussy with interconnects. As for speakers, the NHT SB2 ($400 list) pair up very nicely with the NAD and so do the Omega Loudspeakers Super 3 ($540 list). I would also think that the EPOS M5 ($585 list)or Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 ($300 list) would do very well.

Given a budget of $1000 or so, you could go with the NAD C320 BEE at $400 list; the Music Hall MMF CD 25 at $540 list which brings you to $940, assuming no discount off of list. Buy.com has the (discontinued) Wharfedale Diamond 8.1's for $130 a pair (50% off, so your total cost is $1070) and the 8.2's for $200 (50% off, so your total cost is $1140). Both phenemonal speakers for the price. You could even add the matching sub-woofer for a $100.

As for cables ... I have done very well with Signal Cable (www.signalcable.com) and AV Cables (www.avcables.com). Figure a $100 tops ... you do not need to spend more with the NAD.

Just so you know, my comments come from owning the NAD C320 BEE for 2 years; the Music Hall MMF CD25 for 3 years; the Wharfedale Diamond 8.1 for 2 years; the NHT SB2 for a year; the Omega Super 3 for 3 months. I purchased the Panasonic SX50 and sold it to a friend ... I could not get past the digital dryness of the amp. Other CD players that I tried include the Pioneer PD65 and JVC 602SL. Other speakers that I tried include the EPOS ESL3; B&W 302; and Optimus Pro 5.

Regards, Rich
