Re: Digital - Panasonic SA-XR45 / XR50 - Fair Evaluation?

DonM,

A couple more comments. The speaker impedance affects the sound on the Panasonic XR series. They are no feedback digital amps, so as the speaker impedance rises, the treble also rises I believe. This can cause the highs being emphasized for some folks, I'm sure. I am not experienced with response curves and impedance curves on speakers, but they must have some effect with these amp designs.

I am using my XR45 with Polk RTi28 speakers which are 8 ohm, two way bookshelf, low cost speakers. I want to do the Dennis Murphy crossover replacement sometime, but I just don't have the time! See the URL for Dennis' write up on these speakers. Perhaps that will help others evaluate what my experience is with the XR45.

I am not a very sophisticated audio gear listener and have little experience with "high end" sound, but I do want sound that is as close to live as possible - I really do. I have heard a lot of live classical music, which others have said is very demanding of equipment when recorded, and I use that as my comparison. Some live music is harsh; some is not smooth. I am willing to have that sometimes irritating quality of live music precisely because I want the reproduction to mimic it, not sugar coat it. I do not need non-fatiguing reproduction. Music affects the soul and for me, it is rejuvenating and energy taking, both together. I hope this helps show my perspective and experience. I don't think I'm in the mainstream here. I definitely subscribe to the best sound for a limited budget side of things - it is a necessity for my state in life and you can tell I spent very little on my gear.

Just another inmate in the asylum, with my own set of subjective crazy ideas!

Ben
