The limiting factor is the onboard A-D, both it's 'fair' quality & it's existence at all. I use a modified DIO for outboard A-D with my SA-XR45, which is somewhat better than the internal A-D.I'd have to agree that the 'magic' with this amp happens with the digital inputs, with an A-D in front of it it's merely good...
Using a SA-XR45 is pointless if you listen to analog sources - I've always thought there was a certain 'magic' to a pure analog signal chain, the Panny can only pollute that with digits & it's digital amp stage cannot replace that pure analog magic. That said, I have given up on analog sources since the kind of music I like is now almost exclusively available on redbook CDs & I love my SA-XR45.
