Panasonic Sa XR 45 Bi Amping Info From John Meyer Of Newform

I wrote an email asking John Meyer of Newform what he thought about using the Panasonic Sa XR 45 to bi amp with in Party mode.
He turned me on to a perhaps better way to do it, and i would like to share this with all of you "Panheads".
Johns way of doing it evedently requires an external pre amp or an external crossover.
I know he uses the Behringer Digital crossover.
Anyway, below is Johns prompt email response to the question.

Thanks for the kind words. I certainly belive that the age of cheap great digital products is upon us and the XR45 has gained a toe hold in the consiousness of the audiophile community.

As new digital products come out - and they are on their way - over then next 2 years, I expect to see grudging acceptance from all audiophiles that they are a valid approach to producing great music in the home. For audiophiles who put performance and value ahead of prestige, "grudging" will not apply. They will love this stuff.

On your question, I have no idea how the "party" mode works. I've never gone into that area of the menues. Sounds like something that screws up the sound! Anyway, if I were biamping with the XR45 and wasn't using the Behringer or other external crossover, I'd split the inputs with "Y" connectors (both left and right) into 4 instead of 2 inputs. Then you would run full bandwith power into both terminals of your 801 from the 4 channels of the XR45. This depends on the 801 internal passive crossover and since you say they are set for biwiring, it should be a piece of cake.

Look at the digital system setup under expert advice on the newformresearch.com site for a picture of the inputs to the rear of the XR45 and the channels to use for the outputs. Keep in mind that you have to use XR45 in 6 channel DVD mode for this to work. You can only access 4 channels on the XR45 despite the fact there are 6 inputs and 6 amps. Live with it! (that makes the cost $80 per channel - still not too shabby).

The XR45 is used as a dumb amp only. If you want to use splice this into a home theater setup, things are a little more complicated. See the diagram schematic in the same place on our site.

If you are playing with crossovers, the Behringer will seem like a died-and-gone-to-heaven product. Feedback from the field is 100% positive on both the Panasonic and Behringer DCX2496. Intimidating to use initially but fantastic once you get used to it. Our instructions might make the learning curve a little less steep for the Behringer. Make good notes!

I have to point out that our version 2 Upgraded models have the crossover outside so going digital crossover/biamp is plug and play. I've been waiting years for this and now appears to be the right time to make this move. I personally can't imagine not using DSP crossovers if you have any opportunity at all to do so.

Regards, John Meyer
