Randy Smith of Mesa Boogie says Jerry Garcia of the Greatful Dead feels the same way about Tubes.
I like Tubes too, sometimes, and I go back and forth.
My deceased freind, Bob Pennington, a music teacher and jazz guitarist hated transistors, and he hated Cd's.
He loved his Vandersteen 2 C's , Quicksilver Mono's, and Conrad Johnson PV 2 , with a SOTA Turntable and a GRADO.
God Bless him, he was a great friend, and i miss him.
Bob felt that a transistor anywhere in the chain ruined the music, and who am I to argue with him ?
He was with me at the "shootout", and it was his CJ preamp we used as one in the test.
He watched as we did the test, kinda laughed, and went home and shamlessly enjoyed his tube preamp.
His only response was that it sounded more like live music.
BTw, we used a Dave Grusin CD " Mountain Dance" , and the Klyne sounded the most like the CD player run straight into the amp.
Thats really what we were listening for.
I still shamelessly enjoy tubes too, especially my CAL Tube DAC.
Sometimes, i like the Modified Musatex Bitstream DAC , then somtimes I want to "get tubey"
Right now, i am playing with a Panasonic SA XR 45 and getting great results.
Its all fun, and its all good
