J. V. Sirinius of Stereophile reviews the Boulder monoblock amps model 1151 ($47k per pair) in the latest Stereophile, and of course they sound absolutely marvy. For the money, how could it be otherwise? But wait - this is not the top of the Boulder monoblock line! No. There's also the model 2150 ($130k per pair) and the model 3050 ($306k per pair). Can someone 'splain to me how these more expensive units and going to sound superior enough to the 1151s to justify these absurd prices? We need to have all 3 models tested against each other to find out which model is the marviest of the bunch! Are we likely to ever have such a test? Of course not. And is there any reviewer with ears golden enough to hear any real or purported differences? Of course not.
But in the meantime, we can all be satisfied with just the 1151s to provide sonic nirvana for us because we will only - most of us, anyway - have to take out a 10 year heloc loan to purchase these little jewels. Those with additional funds can of course purchase the 2150 or 3050 once they have convinced themselves they can hear the superiority of said units - or that their acquaintances will be sufficiently impressed. Which I suspect is the reason people buy such amps anyway ...
Does anyone else here suspect that the primary function of audio reviewers is to shill for manufacturers?
