People are entitled to do so let me reiterate. No dispute from me that 2nd and (probably) 3rd order distortion is benign at worst and possibly enjoyable. I believe too that they mask unpleasant, higher order harmonics. 2nd/3rd order, I think doubtless, are an antidote to "cold, lean, analytical and tonally threadbare". (I believe the fellow Inmate & tube amp designer, Ralph, agrees with these comments base on discussions on the forum.)
For long time I'm also conceded that solid state amps with apparently quite low distortion. I'm not technical myself, but by now I don't doubt that negative feedback, while decreasing overall distortion, does so at the cost of increasing high-order harmonics which are unpleasant.
OTOH, I've insisted for more than a decade that there is surely some level at which distortion (and noise) are inaudible. Based my own experience and assertions of other, such as our fellow inmate, AbeCollins, the last technologies such as Purifi have reached this limit, (-120 dB and less).
I'm an old man and I can't argue one way or the other about sound quality in the top octave, but with this latest amplification the best recordings sound more detailed, transparent, and dynamic than I've experience heretofore. I do not find that these improvements are making the sound "cold, lean, analytical and tonally threadbare".
There has always been the issue of the quality of recordings. This was as true in the days when vinyl was the principal medium as it is today. Some recordings inherently sound "cold, lean, analytical and tonally threadbare"; if you amp reveals these inherent attributes, then it's doing its job. However for me the most typical deficiency of mediocre recordings is lack of detail and dynamics.
NOT the 51st state, eh!?!
