I think it's totally about sound quality. Class-AB amplifiers used to sound better than Class-D amplifier. However, I don't think that's true today.I switched to class-D monoblocks when I saw Stereophile give them a Class "A" rating in their Recommended Components. That surprised me so I thought I'd buy a pair. I couldn't afford the class-AB monoblocks but the class-D monoblocks were quite reasonably priced. After buying them, I discovered they sounded absolutely fantastic.
My class-AB amplifier was a Parasound Halo A21 rated at 250-wpc into 8-ohms and 400-wpc into 4-ohms. I was driving a pair of Thiel CS3.7, 4-ohm speakers and I thought they sounded pretty good. However, after upgrading to the PS Audio Stellar M1200 monoblocks, I couldn't be happier with the improvement in sound quality. These 1200-watt class-D monoblocks made my Thiel CS3.7 speakers sound better than I'd ever heard them. I'm now sold on class-D amplifiers and it's all about sound quality and price. They sound great and I can afford them. Oh, yeah! I can also lift them. ;-)
Best regards,
John ElisonPS. I'm now using my PS Audio Stellar M1200 monoblocks to drive my Mini Maggie speaker system. I bought a PS Audio Stellar S300 class D stereo amplifier for the Mini Maggie's, but the M1200 monoblocks sound noticeably better. It's primarily about sound quality. I'd like to try my Parasound Halo A21 with my Mini Maggie's, but I can't lift it. :-)
