well, some transformers just naturally run hot. some hotter than others. You can almost bake cookies on my EICO ST40's main transformer. You amp may be fine, but, if you don't know for sure what "normal" is, then you may want to check the caps. One easy way is to unplug the amp. Then turn it on while it is unplugged, wait for about half an hour, come back and do the following checks.
NOTE: this is a very very basic, low tech, trouble shooting technique used only if a cap checker is not available.
make sure the cap is discharged by attaching (via jumpers) a 2 watt minimum resistor across the terminals. 200K or so resistor.
give it 10 minutes.make a sketch of the lead's arrangements (color code) for later
unsolder and disconnect the leads.
measure ohms from terminal to terminal
should be **at least** 2 megs. better if it is at least 5 megs
measure from each terminal to ground.
readings should be near those above.as the cap charges from the meter's battery, the readings should rise
there should be NO shorts or any readings under 2 megs (if there is perhaps a replacement is in order)reattach and resolder the leads as per the sketch.
double check everything.check again
