a hot transformer usually means something ELSE is on the way out. Something is drawing too much current. This pulls the voltage down and loads the transformer too much. Check around and see if the other items in the amp are within specs. Check filter caps for leakage, cathode resistors, etc.The 6L6GC's use less heater current than the EL34's so that would tend to make the transformer run cooler. I think something else is amiss.
I wouldn't suggest playing it too much until you find the problem.
