After 18 years of using superb tube gear, I switched to solid-state after relocating to Florida from New Jersey. The main reason to no longer use hot glass bottles was relatives from up north using our guest room and the little kids that, of course, came with them (we reside near DisneyWorld).
No longer having loud and tiny people running around here, I purchased a new SLI-80 at the end of 2017. I did not like it until I replaced all the original Electro-Harmonix "small" tubes with NOS Amperex and RCA tubes. Tung-Sol KT120s replaced the E-H KT88s. The sonics were transformed and I love the Cary, both with digital and vinyl. It is rich, extremely detailed from top to bottom, smooth, quick, a bit on the warm side of neutral (one of my goals with the tube rolling), and dead quiet. No tube amp sluggishness or syrupy sound. I kept my McIntosh MA-6500 solid-state integrated amp but it is seldom used.
