Cary SLI-80 integrated amp with vinyl

I made a conclusion that my Cary SLI-80 does not sound good with vinyl (I have two phono pre-amps: Budgie and ProJect TubeBox DS2). Either the amp was optimied for CD or it requires a better (and more expensive!) phono preamp like Cary's PH-1 phono preamp.

While listening to CDs, the sound is powerful and dynamic, though with annoying coloration, but with vinyl records it sounds uninvolving and slow. The current output tubes are vintage GEC KT-88, the turntable is Micro DD8/MA 505 tonearm/Nagaoka MP-500 cartridge, and the speakers are open-baffle Nightingale CTR.2.

Now I switched to the vintage Eico HF-81 amplifier, and it is clearly more compatible with my speakers.

Wha has a similar experience with the SLI-80 and vinyl records?
