Details of the findings at the EICO Pre-amps Audition Party held on 8 May 2003 (3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.)
HF-85(I) vs HF-85(II)
Stock FP vs Modded1.Belafonte at Carnegie Hall (1959) (# 15)
a) Male vocal/ whistling 28 30
b) Stereo soundstaging 28 262.Carol Kidd – Fly me to the moon (#4)
c) Female vocal 25 32
d) Guitar strings 25 283.CHAN Kit-lai – I believe
e) Young female vocal 25 32
4.Yo-yo MA – Playing the music of John Williams (#3)
h) Dynamic 24 28
i) Bass/lower range 24 265.Danny SUMMER & SO Yu – Station
j) Male & Female vocal 27 32
Total: 206(64%) 234(73%)
Note: Theoretical full marks = 4 judges x 8 aspects x 10 marks
(max.) = 320. Therefore, 206 = 65% and 234 = 73%. In practice,
judges valuated the entire systems with the ONLY variable being the
preamp: HF-85(I) or HF-85(II)? So, the difference in scores between
(I) and (II) is more important than the value of scores.Interpretation: Since HF-85(I) is stock and sounds great (i.e. non-
blurry, see judges' comments in earlier posts), the FP modified HF-85
(II) must sound great and non-blurry.Richard CWY
