When I first came to these forums seeking upgrade advice (I was unhappy with the sound I was getting), after listing my system at the time, the first bit of advice I received was to get rid of the Adcom 500 mkII preamp. I found an old Stan Warren "Superphon" passive linestage, and along with the Adcom GFA 535 mkII amp I had at the time, the improvement in sound was substantial (I could finally enjoy the sound rather than cringe and run). In a word, I could describe that Adcom preamp as "harsh".
My sister has since inherited the Adcom 535 mkII and the Superphon preamp, and she's enjoying the combination (I've since moved on to a class A amp and a tubed preamp).
If the GTP 450 is anything like the 500 mkII (or worse?), I'd recommend not worrying about the little red light in the volume knob, and start listening to different preamps! :)
