There are a couple things that come to mind about the muddy sound of a PAS3. I own a restored PAS3 with an upgraded power supply using silicon diodes and NOS EICO tubes and it sounds wonderful. It sounds very tight in the bass and natural airy highs. Not at all muddy! Very 3D and enjoyable.
So, I believe aging electrolytics or the selenium rectifier might have something to do with it. Also the tubes may need replacing. The PAS3 Can sound very good, I use mine to drive the power amp of a Yamaha CA-1010 and really like the difference in sound from the Yamaha preamp.
