I also have a HF-12 that is in need of a going over before startup. The cap across the HV mentioned above by Bambi is wax impregnated and does leak. Mine did anyway. I have the manual for the HF-12 if you would like me to scan it and email it to you. As far as using it as a practice amp for guitar, I think there is a much easier route. Go to AX84.com and click on the "Classic AX84 Projects" link. Actually this is how I got into tube amps. I built the P1 amp. The P1 Extreme or High Octane would be another good alternative. They sound very good and there site has alot of documentation and forum help. The one I built ended up looking alot like this one here: http://annex.ax84.com/media/ax84_m321.pdf Each project has templet layouts and schematics. And the link I posted is a build guide for the 3 models I mentioned. They also offer amp kits for them at Chris Hurley's Doberman site. I sourced my own parts, drilled and painted the chassis, etc. It was very satisfying. There are also sound clips of some of the folks on there playing their amps. The P1 can be upgraded to a High Octane with a few added resistors to allow for a second gain stage.
If on the other hand you are interested in selling your HF-12, I am looking for another one to mate to mine. If not, if anyone knows where I might find one I would appreciate it. And yes, the tone control is the on/off switch.
