hi Alex,
I just receive a Mac 6500 this evening for a week long loan as I am a long time Mac customer. My initial feel out of a few hours of listening is that it has a good Mac sound. The amp used op amp in the pre-amp section, but it produces much better sound then the previous pre such as C35 I suspect as there is little grain in the sound. it could sound slightly dull or not as sweet as the tube when operating cold. I have it on for more then 9 hours now, and the sound is great, esp considering that it uses IC.
The only regret is that the foot print is slightly too big.
I must say it is a buy for the price, though I will take a listen to the 6300 first. There is a chance that I might buy 2275 instead, and waited till next year to explore the latest SS amps that will have AV capability with the focus on audio. I am now looking at the Naim Supernait.
Your Quad is also interesting, if the sound is as good as the 6500. That will be a bargain indeed!
A simple tweak to improve the sound of 6500 will be to bias the op amp closer to class A, by connecting a 5K resistor between the OP amp output to the -ve power supply. The different is a much fuller and sweeter sound, without fail!
very best rgds

I might want to add a 5k between the Op amp output to the -ve PS to push the op amp ito higher bias. This will guaranty better sound still! Of course, I might want to wait for a year or 2 to do it...
