What will you make out of fact that one of friends of mine own Martin-Logan Summit speakers and he bought these amplifier (New Force). According to him, this amp is not capable of driving these speakers - they shut themselves out everytime impedance at M-L drop, particularly in treble.
If I recall correcly, Kal Rubinson from Stereophile reported, in his reviews, the same problem with Bel Canto.The problem is that many class D designers do not publish their RELEVANT measurments. Distortion at 1 kHz level is meaningless for these amps but distortion or resulting output impedance at 20kHz is highly paramount to their performance.
Again, my comment has nothing to do with "musicality" of these amps and only with their ability to drive difficult load. However, I must state that the distortions of all swithcing amp are of second harmonics, mostly, and thus create euphonic (low quality) tube-like warmth. Some people love it, and it includes profesional reviewers, other see it as irritant and huge veil. For the record,the best tube amps have extremely very low level of 2nd harmonic distortions - see specs of CAT, BAT and they represent acustic live music so well..Class D amps are not beter nor worse then tube or ss amps - ask specs, do careful auditioning and choose that you like. If you use to attending concerts you may have one set of references if you do not, for example and its your right to like what you want.
The really funny thing is that one of these TAS reviewers while writing Spectron noted that its bass is somewhat leaner then other class D amps - yet in their discussion they all agreed that most class D amps demonstrate exaggurated bass - so that of Specron was just right? I am saying "fanny" because TAS reviewers suppose to compare equipment sound to the "Absolute" or live acoustic and not to each other. Finally, discussing technical feature of the entire class and not ,at least publish each individual designer's specs, is .. hypocracy?
