This has not been told to me but what I have seen. I forgot to mention as well that when I was at a speaker repair shop last year in LA the guy had asked me if I repair Class D amps, because he had a few sub woofers and Active speakers with plate Class D amps in them that were not working. These were Pro and Home items, plus with me being in bands I have seen a few PA and Bass amps go out and all had Class D amps built into them. Aguilar and Mesa Boogie along with other use ICE based Class D amps and I have seen some of those with issues as well. My Carvin BX1500 uses Class D but it's their own design and I was recently told by a Bass amp designer that some of the parts used in the power supply and Class D portions of the amp are no longer made and if something were to go out, it would be almost impossible to repair the amp.
So that is why I asked the question about durability over time. I have only had my two Crown XLS 1502 and 2502 amps for a couple of years with the 1502 in service for a year in my system. I never had any issues with it but on those days/night when cranking it the fans would come on, not loud but on and it was on the warm side when touching the outer chassis.
Recently I had seen a post on another forum that a guy received new Module PCB's from Hypex and had broke cap leads from off the pcb during transport (another issue). In that post or another the were some pics of the new Hypex modules with high temps recorded via thermal camera that I posted here about a month or more back. Now, maybe the unit doesn't get hot on the chassis but at the module pcbs it seem quite high with the temps recorded.
I'm not making a statement that Class D are like this but was more like asking a question to those here that have purchase some high end Class D amps and what their experiences are over years of use. Even though my EDGE M8 class AB amp is better than all my other amps, as I get older its getting harder to move a more heavy amp and I would like to buy a nice Class D amp to save my back from anymore issues when moving the power amps (I have tube amp as well) in and out of my system.
I'm just wanting to know those experiences before I pluck down a good chunk of $$$ on a Class D amp. I would hate to pay a big amount and it not last long. My EDGE M8 is around 40 years old now and has been a solid amp, the only issue i had with it was when I connected a GAS Thedrea preamp that passed and hi negative DC to the amp and blew out some of the transistor or it would have never had an issue. I recently recapped it due to age of the capacitors in it but no issues. That's it.
Yes, I agree with your statement of buying from well known brands with good track records.
Again, I just wanted some info and didn't mean to suggest that Class D is not a good design.
