Re: Teac A-L700P Tripath Amp vs. Sonic Impact T?

I have both, except my Teac has a Red Wine (battery and other goodies) modification. My recollection is that the stock Teac had a slightly grainy top end, sweet transparent midrange, very good soundstaging, and very good bass. The stock Sonic Impact has good, extended treble, sweet transparent midrange, good soundstaging, and adequate bass. I am curently using the stock Sonic Impact with a pair of Insignia speakers in our vacation home -- a good combination! You have to use a good 12VDC wallwart, which you have to buy separately anyway.

My recollection is that you could use the "preset" volume controls on the rear of the Teac to adjust volume (each of the three channels invididually). The Red Wine mod removed them, so I cannot verify that for you. Is the Teac still available? I think you can find them used, once in a while, but not new.

Have you looked into the Sonic Impact Super T-Amp? It has a better case, better volume control, better binding posts, better (and more) internal components, and the same Tripath chip as the original. However, it is more money ($140).
