Not true

I'm the export manager for an American company in another industry. Just ask my Canadian distributor if UPS ground is the same cost to them as it would be to a nearby American city! Customs charges, duties, GST plus increased actual shipping charges all play a significant roll.

Getting product across the border, any border, is NOT the same as shipping within the US. We are asked by consumers in Canada to send repairs back to them by regular mail all the time. Why? Because if it's small enough they think we won't have to declare what is being sent and they won't have to pay clearance charges. But that's not the case. A legitimate company has to fill out all of the paperwork properly. If they are willing to lie about the true value, or to declare it as a gift, I wouldn't want to work with that company.

You can't ship a large component and insure it for $3,000 and then say it has no value for customs. When it's a repair, maybe you declare it for less, but it gets very complicated, which was my point from the beginning. It adds a dimension to the story that you left out of the initial post.
