Try looking at the input impedance of the amp first, and then you will know why a passive is not an option.
As far as the break in, the amp had sat for about 7 months. But I have done this long enough to know what I heard. I also used the pre section of a Musical Fidelity Nu Vista M3 to run it, and could make direct comparisons to the on board amp of the MF versus the H2O Audio, so I had a reference point to compare against as it settled into the system. It was just a matter of moving speaker wire, and adjusting volume, although they were quite close as the MF is 300 WPC while the H2O Audio is 250 a channel.
But feel free to come up with whatever conjecture fits your world view.
