Sure there are some very nice sounding solid state amps, but usually they are way over the 2K range. And I use 2K as my personal point to where I call equipment expensive. And there are alot of audio folks out there who consider 1K for an amp a bit hard to swallow. With that being said, I have heard some of the chip based amplifiers sound quite nice. A friend of mine has a very nice sounding Audiozone. But these amps have limitations in power output, and impedance loads. Not a good choice for driving a pair of Martin Logan CLS or Apogee Calipers.
However, there are some basic sound differences in SS and tubes. And it is true that systems will be designed around these characteristics. Of course the end result is how does the system sound? All I am saying about the Sm 70 PRO is that it is a fine sounding amplifier, with many of the midrange characteristics of a tube amplifier. Not as holographic and intimate sounding as a 300B based amplifier. But it does have other attributes that a single ended triode based amplifier will have trouble matching.
But once again, thre have been great sounding SS amplifiers since the 80's for sure. But they are expensive, and still expensive. Try buying a used Threshold, Spectral, Rowlands, or Boulder. Even a well kept vintage piece from these companies can challange the 2K barrier. Although Threshold is often had for 1.2K or so. Yet these little Monarchy retail for 1.8K a pair. Or 900 if you can live with 35 wpc.
