I concur with Sordidman. I think the better SS designers really started to figure out how to optimize their designs almost twenty years ago. While there still is some bad SS gear out there much of it is pretty darn good. There are still a few things good tubes do better but SS generally outperforms tubes in other areas so it becomes a matter of your system, taste and budget. I've heard some tube gear that I think is sublime and also quite a bit that I find unacceptably colored. There isn't a monolithic SS sound anymore than all tube gear alike. Those who would make a preference for tubes or SS some sort of test of audio doctrinal purity are difficult to take seriously.
