Actually, it was just that none of us at Ayre liked the looks of the sketches that were presented. In the end we did it ourselves and were happy with the result. We stole elements from many of the sketches and put them all together in an amalgam. I don't think it's the best look, but if you see it in person the finish adds a tremendous amount of appeal. That was something the machine shop came up with. Overall I am pretty happy.
Just for your reference, I think one of the best audio designs ever was the Levinson No.38 preamp. It's looking a tad dated now, but I still think it was a classic look.
