the problem again is what people have heard specifically not tubes in general. Jolida is a bit more tube sounding than ASL which some have SS like qualities for the same money.Listening to Bryston separates (as i've been familiar with Bryston most of my life and they got me interested in high end) when using their separates (high power low noise floor yadda yadda) versus a little 10 Watt Single ended tube amp what surprised me was the following which the tube did a better job at:
LEADING EDGES(attack) - yes surprised me because everything people have told me about tubes (usually the ignorant on internet forums who parot what some other forumer said) then I would not have expected astringed instruments and electronic guitar to excel with incredible twang and sparkle -- Amlifiers like Bryston sound subdued dull 2 dimensional without the openness and twang.
There was no area the Bryston separates (or any other SS combo I've heard) won out on in listening sessions. Not bass not treble extension not 3dimensionality to the soundstage...this is not a colouration because that would smudge the leading edges as a soft "wooley" sound (and yes I have heard tube amps do that but that is hardly all tube amps and indeed the minority of the one's I've heard).
Tube amps however I suppose can reveal that kind of sound but that is presumably with a speaker that the tube amp cannot drive. My amp is 10 watts and one reviewer liked it even saying if he stopped reviewing he would buy it for himself...high praise -- but he faulted it in the frequency extremes...then reading it again it is revealed he was driving Thiel speakers --- That's like judging the speed of a Ferarri but dumping it in the ocean and saying GO and then complaining it didn't quite perform.
Too many people are in the amp trap mode -- the B&W folks for instance are always trying to find an amp that will work better with the speakers --- maybe it's the speakers!!
It's system synergy in my view that is not paid any attention to by the majority of the industry...listen to a total system that you absolutely think is the bee's knees and try and buy the entire system from front to back.
That could very well be Magnepan/Bryston for one person and it could be a 3 watt Cary/K-horn for another person...and it really is dependant on how you as an individual hears it. One person hears a colouration another hears it as accurate decay.
