Home Amp/Preamp Asylum

Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here.

Good advice....

He gave you some good advice on the Eico. The small Eico mono blocks are a good deal. They sound very good when the old coupling capacitors, and drifted resistors are replaced. The Scott you mentioned, or most any vintage tube piece is really a smart way to get into tubes. They will hold onto their value, and even appreciate over time. The simple Eico mono blocks can give you some practice at replacing capacitors and get you "soldering." The reward is good sounding music when paired with decent speakers. I am packing up my apartment stereo. I had a huge surprise when I on a whim I bought a vintage magnavox 6V6 push pull stereo tube amplifier of around 11 watts a channel. It has the same sweet midrange of my 300b mono block amps. It is perhaps lacking in the lowest bass to be sure, but for a bedroom stereo it is very nice sounding. I always like to remind people that your speakers are the most important part of any stereo system.. Good luck and let us know what you buy. John
