Re: Cheap audiophile gear: yamaha, pioneer

I would recommend a Hafler 1100 ($199) or the 1600 $249) www.audiogear.com I used a 1600 for on site playback of recordings and for the money it is a good, economical piece, and reliable. It can be modded at some point which can make for much more detailed listenting, but it is still a great place to start. The P1000 is an TransNova upgrade but is still 75 watts/ch at $449, but I just shot your budget. The P3000 is 150 watts/ch at $549 and I doubt your speakers need this much power, but that is your call. The Haflers all have front panel input attenuators so you can even run a CD player directly into them and control the output(vol) manually. You could even use a remote vol control like the Creek OBH's as I do. They have a 1 input and 2 input models which make for nice passive remote vol controls.
