Re: Cheap audiophile gear: yamaha, pioneer

simplest thing is probably panasonic sa-xr45 or other versions of it -- it'll do all the things you need for well under your budget and has a strong folowing e.g.

The Sonic Impact's advantage is it's decent low-power amplification for a trivial amount of money, and you can always do something with it or keep it as a backup. But the $99 TEAC amp is indeed a real bargain given that you get a proper case, decent connectors and more power. I think you'd still need some sort of preamp to switch sources and do volume, whereas the SI does give you a volume control.

If you don't get a receiver, check out http://www.fmtunerinfo.com/ for ideas about tuners. If you're going to move to separates, this is not a bad time to start looking for a nice tuner.

Or, if you're ready for a walk on the wild side, your speakers would also work with low-powered tube gear. The Decware Zen should be available used within your budget.
