The "uninvolving and slow" issue might be due to your phono preamps. I would try a decent solid-state phono pre before giving up on the SLI-80.In my experience, some of the most lively sounding phono preamp setups include a Step Up Transformer (SUT). I would run a MC cartridge into the SUT which would drive the MM input of a solid-state phono preamp.
Or if you're running a MM cartridge try a good solid-state MM phono pre (without the SUT, obviously).
I have no experience with the Cary SLI-80 but that's one amp I would like to try someday.
