RE: REVIEW: McIntosh C-11 Preamplifier (Tube)

Tube rolling: The V6 is a tube used in the tone circuit, like in EICO HF-81's similar circuit. I haven't noted too much change in sound quality rolling from one tube to another. It does have to be balanced between the two triode sections so constant yearly checking is important to monitor changes in aging between the two sections.

V4 and V5 must be balanced between the two tubes in overall transconductance and otherwise will bring out unbalanced sound. I once had a strange unbalanced sound between the two channels, with bass sounding a bit louder on the left channel. I tested the two TFK ECC83's and found them within tolerance. Puzzled, I put in my SOVTEK 12AX7LPS's and the problem disappeared.

Point learnt: even if two tubes test perfect on tube testers, they may give strange and unexpected outputs in a given actual use.
