I had the LS16mkII and thought it was a fine sounding linestage. I now have the LS25mkII. Both of these use the 6H30 tube which some folks don't care for. Maybe the 6H30 doesn't sound tubey enough for them and it is true that you have more tube rolling choices with the older LS16 or LS15. Both of these use the 6922 tube. The LS16 is the better sounding unit vs the LS15, at least according to the ARC marketing literature.
I found the LS16mkII to be somewhat neutral as tube linestages go. Not very tubey at all. At the other extreme, I would call the Cary SLP-05 rich and tubey. I needed a somewhat neutral sounding linestage as my EL34 tube amps are tubey enough. ;-)
The ARC linestages are also very versatile with balanced and RCA ins/out plus the full function remote control.
